Description

Grow New England Aster from fresh Aster novae-angliae flower seeds. New England Aster will produce masses of gorgeous pink-purple blooms atop stems that grow 24 to 72 inches tall. Spreading up to 2 to 4 feet wide, its leaves & foliage are attractive while its petals are slender and accented with golden yellow centers. Grown as a perennial flowering plant, the New England Aster will establish a deep root system that allows it to return year after year. If temperatures are too harsh, this can cause the plants to die, however new sprouts can emerge from any seeds that fall to the bare ground.

New England Aster will not only draw our eyes and attention to them, they can also attract an array of beneficial insects as well. The plants are known for bringing in all sorts of butterflies and bumblesbees and is especially important to honey bees. You will also see an occasional Monarch butterfly making an appearance in the garden as well.

New England Aster is a bit of a quick growing plant and can take a fair share of space. with that being said, its best to sow this variety directly in the flower garden, either by itself, or in the background of other low growing flowers. New England Aster has been in gardens all over the world for decades, displaying their gorgeous, eye catching blooms to onlookers through the late summer months, up until the first frost.

Sowing The Seed

New England Aster is best sown directly outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Remove all unwanted plant life from your sowing area, turning the dirt or replacing it with new dirt. Scatter the tiny Aster seeds to the surface of the soil, allowing direct sunlight to reach them. This is crucial for a successful germination.

Growing Conditions

New England Aster is best established in an area of full sunlight to light shade. Temperatures should be kept at roughly 70F to 75F for optimal growth. New England Aster enjoys a fairly rich soil with a decent amount of moisture, however it is pretty well adapted to most soils and sowing mediums. Just make sure that the soil is well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil.

Germination & Growth

Your New England Aster seeds will begin to germinate within roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of roughly 24 to 72 inches tall and can grow to a width of almost 4 feet wide. Space seeds and plants a good 2 to 3 feet apart from one another. New England Aster seeds produce beautiful flowering plants that attract an array of insects, such as butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds and ladybugs.
