Description

The Henderson Lima Bean is a bush bean that was first introduced in New York by Peter Henderson & Company in 1888 and gained popularity with local gardeners because it did not require poles for support, unlike the pole variety.

Henderson Lima Bean seeds are small and creamy white in color. They do not tolerate cold temperatures, so they need to be planted after the last frost of the season. Soil temperature of at least 65 degrees is ideal. Being of the bush variety, the Henderson lima bean plant can grow anywhere from 12-18 inches. It is a hearty and strong bush that is also good for growing indoors in pots because of its manageable size and stature. Henderson limas reach maturity earlier than most limas, on average at about 65 days. The bean pods are broad and flat and can be anywhere from 3-5 inches in length.

Sowing The Seed

Lima Beans can be started indoors, or directly outdoors as well. If started indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. The beans are rather large, so be sure to place them at a depth of at least 1” under topsoil. Provide a support for early sprouts to cling to. Transplant, or direct sow your Lima Beans in the garden when the weather has warmed and all danger of frost has passed.

Growing Conditions

Lima Beans will require an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day. The plants will thrive in temperatures of at least 65F and require a soil that is fertile and rich in organic matter. You must also make sure that your sowing medium is well drained as well. Adding a light compost to any areas containing hard, compact soil will improve your overall drainage. Water the seeds daily until germination occurs.

Germination & Growth

Lima Beans typically germinate within a good 7 to 21 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of roughly 18 to 24 inches tall and can spread about 12 inches wide. They can be spaced roughly 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. Henderson Lima is a very high yielding bush bean. Harvest in 65 to 70 days.

Harvesting Georgia Southern Collard Greens

Henderson Lima Beans may be harvested anywhere from 60-80 days after germination when the pods feel full and firm, but before the pods start to turn yellow. The plants tend to yield beans all at once so be ready! To save some seeds, allow a number of pods to dry and pick at the end of the season. Once completely dried, the seeds can be stored for up to a year in a cool, dry place. Henderson lima beans have an incredible flavor and can be enjoyed fresh and even frozen or dried.
