Description

Grow the Wild Blue Iris flower from fresh Iris missouriensis flower seeds. The Wild Blue Iris flower is a stunning plant that displays unique looking blooms atop grass like foliage. Often grown from Iris flower Bulbs, this variety can be easily established from seeds in the early Spring. The flowers are mainly pale blue, accented with white veins and yellow streaks or marking through the center of its petals. Each plant will mature to a height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall, making it leveled with the average persons knee cap.

The Wild Blue Iris flower is categorized as a perennial flowering plant. It grows quickly, establishing a deep root system. It will later wilt with harsh frosts, only to return again the following growing season. If temperatures become too harsh, the plants can die, however they can drop seeds to the bare ground to regrow the following year. Once the seeds drop, they will go through the natural wintering process of stratification.

Wild Blue Iris flowers are known to attract not only a crowd of envious eyes, but also an array of beneficial insects. The Iris flower is well known for attracting hummingbirds, butterflies & bumblebees to the garden. You will also find that this lovely flower makes an excellent cut flower as well. Enjoy it in floral arrangements and bouquets.

Sowing The Seed

Wild Blue Iris flower seeds should undergo a 4 week period of stratification, allowing them to go through what would normally be a natural process of wintering outdoors. Once this process has been completed, you can pour boiling water over the seeds to jump start their growth. Iris flower seeds can be sown indoors or outdoors. If started indoors, sow in peat pots at a depth of 1/8" under topsoil, so that light can still reach the seeds. This is crucial for germination. Sowing in groups of 5 per pot is recommended. Transplant or direct sow the seeds into the garden when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed.

Growing Conditions

Wild Blue Iris flowers will enjoy an area that consists of full sunlight for the majority of the day. They prefer warmer temperatures of 70F to 75F and will grow in acidic soils, but are quite adaptable. We recommend that you add a light compost to any areas of hard, compact soil, so that the roots do not become waterlogged as this causes your seedlings to wilt and rot. Iris flower seeds and the surrounding soil should also be kept moist, but not soaked.

Germination & Growth

Your Wild Blue Iris flower seeds will begin to germinate in roughly 28 to 35 days after sowing. It is a bit of a slow process, but the time to germinate these beauties is well worth it. Wild Blue Iris flowers grow to a height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall, making it just about the same height as the average person's kneecap. The plants can be spaced 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. Enjoy your Wild Blue Iris flowers and the beautiful butterflies that they bring to the garden.
