Grow Scarlet Cinquefoil from fresh Potentilla thurberi flower seeds. Scarlet Cinquefoil flowers display beautiful deep red blooms that can attract an array of beneficial insects such as hummingbirds, bumblebees, butterflies & ladybugs. The plants themselves sit roughly 12 to 30 inches tall. Classified as a perennial flowering plant, the Scarlet Cinquefoil will grow quickly, bloom profusely and later wilt, only to return the following year through it’s deeply established roots.
Scarlet cinquefoil is a great addition to any flower garden and does well in pots and containers as well. Sow in flower beds, borders or along walkways for a brilliant burst of red flowers. Although the plants may not bloom until the second season of growth, they are well worth the wait.
Scarlet Cinquefoil flower seeds are best started directly outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Begin by clearing your sowing area of all unwanted weeds & plant life. Turn the soil, or throw down new soil in it’s place. Scatter the seeds to the surface of your sowing area, lightly covering the seeds with 1/16” of topsoil as they will require light to successfully germinate. See below for additional information about spacing.
Scarlet Cinquefoil will flourish in an area of full sunlight or partial shade. Temperatures should be at least 65F to 70F. The soil should be moderate to rich and should also be well drained. Adding a mixture of compost to hard compacted soil can improve drainage. Water daily so that the seeds and the soil are kept moist up until germination has occurred.
Scarlet Cinquefoil flower seeds will begin to germinate within roughly 14 to 28 days after sowing. The plants grow to a mature height of about 12 to 30 inches tall and can be spaced anywhere from 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. This flowering plant is best enjoyed outdoors and is not often seen indoors or as a cut flower.
