Description

Grow Coreopsis Plains from freshly harvested Coreopsis tinctoria seeds. Coreopsis Plains is popularly grown in much of the United States. It is an annual flowering plant that will grow quickly, bloom profusely through the summer months, later dying with the first frost. The small yellow flowers are accented with mahogany colored centers and each flower head is about 1 to 1.5 inches wide when in full bloom.

Coreopsis Plains will grow to a mature height of roughly 30 to 36 inches tall and can spread 1 to 2 feet wide. They are perfect to fill a bland space in the garden or in the field, as the plants will have no troubles producing a cluster of beautiful flowers. A handful of flowers may turn completely red from time to time, which is normal.

Coreopsis Plains is an excellent choice to attract an array of beneficial insects as well. They are known to attract bumblebees because of their potent source of nectar. They also attract other insects such as butterflies, hummingbirds and ladybugs as well.

Sowing The Seed

Coreopsis Plains are best established directly outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Simply clear the area of all unwanted plant life, turning the soil, or replacing it with new soil. Scatter the tiny slivers of seed directly to the surface of the soil. Leave the seeds slightly uncovered as they will require light to germinate properly.

Growing Conditions

Coreopsis Plains will enjoy an area that receives full sunlight for the majority of the day. The plants thrive in temperatures of roughly 68F or higher and aren't too picky on soil conditions. Although they do prefer a soil that is well draining. To improve drainage, you can always add a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily until germination has occurred.

Germination & Growth

The seeds will begin to show signs of life within as little as 7 to 10 days after sowing. The plants themselves will reach a mature height of roughly 30 to 36 inches tall and can spread 1 to 2 feet in width. Spacing the plants 12 to 18 inches apart is recommended. When the plants begin to flower, you will enjoy an explosion of tiny yellow flowers, accented with mahogany colored centers.
