Description

We’re not joking: You can grow pink sunflowers in your garden this summer. The Ruby Eclipse hybrid variety blooms in shades from blush to bright purple against creamy white, making them perhaps the most unique sunflower on the market.

Ruby Eclipse sunflowers are perfect for gardeners who like to show off their sense of originality and taste, even if they consider themselves black thumbs. They’re incredibly easy to grow from seed, and quickly rocket from four to six feet in height with an 18” spread. The prolific blooms range from six to eight inches in diameter on sturdy, branching stems. Their center discs are a warm brown, perfectly complementing the petals’ soft hues, and they attract pollinators and other beneficial insects.

You can grow them in full sun as background plantings in medium-quality, moist soil in USDA Hardiness Zones 2-11. They typically bloom for about a month in late summer, maturing in 55-65 days. We recommend staggering the plantings to prolong the bloom and deadheading spent flowers to keep things tidy. But don’t trash the trimmings! Invert and dry the heads so you can harvest the seeds, which make excellent wild bird food in the winter.

Ruby Eclipse nasturtium makes fantastic, long-lasting cut flowers, and BoHo brides love them as wedding decor and in bouquets. They’re also a hit with farmer’s market flower vendors, and we’re certain you’ll love them, too. Pick up a packet of non-GMO Ruby Eclipse sunflowers and find out for yourself why we’re thrilled to have them in our collection.

Sowing The Seed

Sunflowers are not particularly fond of being transplanted, but if started indoors, sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow at a depth of 1/2” under topsoil. Transplant entire pots into the garden, or direct sow when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Stakes may be necessary to support your Sunflowers, only until the stems become stronger enough to stand on their own.

Growing Conditions

Sunflowers grow long taproots and may rot if the roots become waterlogged. It is recommended to check your sowing area for hard, compacted soil prior to sowing. Renew any hard, compacted soil with a mixture of compost. Sunflowers will enjoy an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day and should be watered daily so that the soil is kept moist until germination has occurred.

Germination & Growth

Your Ruby Eclipse Sunflower seeds will begin to germinate within 7 to 10 days after sowing. The plants will grow to a mature height of 4 to 6 feet tall and can be spaced roughly 6 to 12 inches apart from one another. Ruby Eclipse Sunflower is an annual, branching variety, that produces cherry red, yellow tipped flowers with dark brown centers.
