Single Packet of 600 Seeds

Grow a garden filled with Canadian Milk Vetch, from freshly harvested Astragalus canadensis seeds. Canadian Milkvetch also named “Rattle Weed” is a great source for nectar and is highly sought after by bumblebees and honey bees. It also makes an excellent food source for rabbits, deer, ground hogs and livestock. It is a perennial growing plant that produces white blooms and green foliage. This milk vetch variety grows to a mature height of about 30 to 50 inches tall.

Canadian Milkvetch is a little tough to grow when established from seed. They should be sown directly outdoors when the weather is warm, and all danger of frost has passed. Before sowing in the spring, start by pouring hot water over the seeds and letting them soak for 24 hours. Next, select an area that receives full sunlight and sow the seeds at a depth of about 1/3” under topsoil. This variety isn’t too picky on soil conditions, but prefers moist soil, but can tolerate sandy soils as well.

Water daily so that the soil is kept moist until germination occurs. You should start to see sprouts within 4 to 6 weeks after sowing. Once seedlings are established keep watered so that the soil is never fully dried out. When the plants grow to maturity, they may only require water in dry spots. The Canadian Milkvetch may not flower until the second year of growth.
