If you're trying to identify that beautiful splash of color you've noticed in summer and fall gardens, look closely because what you might be seeing is the Enfant de Nice Carnation! Dianthus caryophyllus's origin is widely thought to come somewhat from the Mediterranean, yet prolific cultivation throughout the past two centuries makes an exact trace difficult to establish.

How Lovely!

These perennial bloomers are a favorite amongst florists, possibly due to their luscious blossoms, which come several to a stem. Carnations are also known as a rather romantic flower, a wonderful way to show that special someone how you are feeling!

Their hues vary from delicate whites and pale tones, to gentle purples, pinks and burgundies to deep reds and even more vibrant yellows. These versatile petals are also graced with an especially present perfume. Their scents are sure to see some visitors stopping by your gardens, as these flowers are keen to attracting butterflies!

Strong & Lively!

For the gardeners out there, Enfant de Nice Carnations act as a perfect backdrop to your arrangement. If left to stand alone, these can reach heights between 12 and 24 inches tall and have a width of about a foot wide. Placing them near a fence or a wall these also create a beautiful contrast.

Quick bloomers, you can see budding signs within 14 days! Carnations also are drought resistant, and have one of the longer life spans of flowers once cut from their root! These herbaceous beauties are that spicy fragrance to an autumn evening air, and add that sweet summer smell that takes you back to younger years...

Sowing The Seed

Clove Carnation seeds are best established in starter pots, for transplanting outdoors later on. Start in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow 3 to 4 seeds per pot, at a depth of 1/16" under topsoil. The seeds will require a bit of direct light to properly germinate, so it is recommended that you do not bury the seeds deeper than the recommended sowing depth above. Transplant entire pots, or direct sow outdoors, when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed.

Growing Conditions

Carnations will thrive in an area of full sunlight for at least 5 to 6 hours daily. The temperatures should be at least 70F and the soil will need to be fertile, yet well drained. To increase your drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to any areas that consist of hard, compact soil. Water the seeds daily, with a mist setting, so that the soil remains moist until germination has occurred.

Germination & Growth

Your seeds will typically take anywhere between 7 and 21 days to germinate successfully. The plants will reach a mature height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall and can be spaced 12 inches apart from one another. This mixture produces 1.5 to 2 inch, double blooms in shades of red, rose, white & yellow. The plants release a refreshing, clove like scent, attracting an array of beneficial insects to the garden.
