Grow Epazote herb from fresh Chenopodium ambrosioides herb seeds. Epazote is a native to much of Central and South America. It is mainly used for medicinal and culinary purposes. Epazote adds a distinct flavor to Mexican dishes and is a staple ingredient in bean dishes, both for its taste and its anti-flatulent properties. The seeds & oils from this herb should not be consumed as they are toxic. You may also want to steer clear of the flowering tips of the stems as well.
Epazote will grow to a mature height of roughly 24 to 36 inches tall and 24 inches wide. This particular herb is grown as an annual plant. They will grow quickly, and will prefer a warmer climate.
Sowing The Seed
Epazote seeds are best started indoors, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow in peat pots, sprinkling the tiny seeds directly to the surface of the soil. Transplant outdoors when the weather becomes warm enough for this tropical herb to thrive. Placing the entire peat pot into the earth will prevent root shock.
Epazote enjoys very hot climates, so provide an area of full sunlight at temperatures of at least 70F or above. This herb isn't to picky on soils and prefers a lose, sandy medium. Moisture is necessary for germination to occur, however the plants are pretty drought tolerant once they are established.
Germination & Growth
Epazote will begin germinating in as little as 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants reach a mature height of anywhere between 24 to 36 inches tall. Space your plants roughly 18 to 24 inches apart. Epazote is ready for harvesting in 45 to 65 days after first sprouts appear.
