The Golden Acre Cabbage (Brassica Oleracea) is a small, sweet heirloom variety that is easy to grow and produces an abundant crop. This heirloom cabbage variety makes the perfect addition to home gardens all over the country. The dark green heads are compact and dense, with tightly wrapped heads and few outer leaves. Each head finishes out at just 3-5 pounds, making it easy to consume before spoilage occurs. These small cabbages measure only 5-7 inches and are perfectly ball shaped. These little cabbage heads are beautiful, as well as great tasting. Even the inner leaves are tender and sweet.
The Golden Acre Cabbage dates back to the 1920's and has long been a favorite of gardeners because of its crunchy sweet taste. The short growing season makes it a welcome addition to your summer recipes, including slaw, sauerkraut, and salads. Best used fresh, the Golden Acre Cabbage does not keep well in cold storage.
Like any garden plant, protection from pests and predators is necessary. Beneficial nematodes added to the soil will prevent root maggots from breaking the heads off the stalks.
Flea beetles can be avoided by covering the young cabbages with breathable mesh row covers.
More serious pests like cabbage loopers and cut worms may require spraying with an organically approved solution like Monterey Garden spray or Safer Dust. Tough to remove pests may require the chemical pesticide, pyrethrin.
