Description

Thumbelina zinnia flowers are an excellent choice for gardeners of all levels. These fast-growing and long-blooming plants can be used in beds, borders, containers, or even as a pollinator friendly plant to attract butterflies and other beneficial insects to the garden. Thumbelina zinnias come in many colors such as pink, purple, red, orange, white and yellow with semi-double to double blooms that make them perfect for cut flower arrangements. They are sure to add color and beauty to any garden!

Thumbelina zinnias are a 1963 All-America Selections winner, and they are fast-growing and long-blooming plants. On average, these plants reach a height of 12 to 18 inches tall and have a spread of 8 to 10 inches wide. They tend to be low maintenance but will benefit from regular deadheading for further blooming cycles. Thumbelina zinnias prefer full sun in well-drained soil with moderate water during the growing season.

These flowers are considered to be annual growing plants. Annuals complete their entire lifecycle in one year, requiring little maintenance throughout the season as they grow, flower, set seed, and die back at the end of the year. Annuals can be planted from either seeds or transplants which will bloom within weeks after planting. With proper care such as ample sunlight and water requirements met, annual flowers will reward you with lots of colorful blooms throughout the growing season until the first frost arrives.

Sowing The Seed

Zinnias are not particularly fond of being transplanted. However, if you are looking to start them indoors, it is recommended to sow them in peat pots, so that the entire pot can be transplanted later on to prevent root shock. If started outdoors, be sure to turn the soil, or throw down new soil in its place. Sow the seeds when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed, at a shallow depth of 1/4" under topsoil.

Growing Conditions

Zinnias will prefer an area of full sunlight with temperatures that exceed 60F. Although they are adaptable, it is best to use a soil that is humus rich, and fertile. Drainage is crucial, so replacing any hard, compact soil with a fresh mixture of compost is recommended. Water daily so that the soil remains moist until germination occurs.

Germination & Growth

Your Zinnias will begin to emerge in roughly 7 to 10 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of about 12 to 18 inches tall and can be spaced roughly 12 inches apart from one another.
